Chief’s Message

Now a message from Chief Ray Goodwin:

Thank you for spending the time to learn more about the Onset Fire Department. The Proud history of the Onset Fire Department goes back over one hundred years and draws its greatest strength from the spirit of commitment and dedication to the service of our community. This is shown most in the fact that the Onset Fire District was formed not by government but by the inhabitants of the district. The members of the department are drawn from local citizens that selflessly serve the community every day and night to provide the highest levels of services possible. It is my singular pleasure to lead this organization knowing that there is nothing stronger than the heart of a person volunteering to help someone else in their greatest time of need.

In these rapidly changing times, our fire department has faced many daunting challenges and is evolving to meet them. Our department consists of seven career members, fifty-three on-call members, Fire Alarm room Operators, and a growing number of Massachusetts Maritime Academy interns operating on the combination model, which is a mix of career and on-call firefighters working on shift and additional staff called in to augment our forces as needed. The Onset Fire Department is an All hazards department, meaning we respond to the needs of the community, regardless of the nature of the incident and mitigate the hazard for the most positive possible outcome. The department provides a wide range of services including structural firefighting, wildland firefighting, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, emergency medical services (E.M.S.), maritime operations, public assistance, fire prevention & education, training of department members, emergency & strategic planning, and incident command & control.

As a lifelong member of the Onset Fire Department, it is my honor to represent this outstanding organization and I am continuously awed and humbled by the dedication, compassion, courage, and ingenuity of its members and their commitment to the safety and stability of the community. As the department conducts the business of public safety, we continue to evaluate operations to be responsive and adaptable for our residents and business within the Onset Fire District.
